Uniforms

For details about proper the Dress Code at St. John’s, please refer to our Student Handbook.

Wearing the school uniform is a part of the formation of young men and women that takes place here at St. John Chrysostom School. Uniforms are intended to create a sense of unity and pride among the students, and to allow them to concentrate their minds on matters intellectual and spiritual, rather than material. A good appearance in terms of dress and grooming is also related to what we are trying to teach the students about always striving to do and be the best that they can be. Therefore, uniforms are to be worn from the first day of school. We ask your cooperation in this matter. If parents are conscientious about uniform regulations, the children will consider it a matter of importance, too. Uniforms should be kept neat, clean and in good repair.

Attendance / Tardiness

Prompt and regular attendance is essential. A student can not make up for a day of teacher instruction, even if missing assignments are completed. A record of all absences and tardiness is kept in the Student Attendance Register, which is an official document.

If a child is ill, the parents must call the school health room 310-677-1740 , #444 before 8:30 a.m. If the child is absent and the school has not been contacted, a phone call will be made to the home or parent’s work.

The first bell rings at 7:55 a.m. Students arriving in the classroom after 8:00 a.m. are considered tardy. Students arriving after 8:00 a.m. must report to the Attendance Office before being admitted to class. A classroom admission slip will be issued to the student to be admitted to the classroom. This admission slip is kept on file in the student’s homeroom.

When a student has been absent or tardy, a WRITTEN EXCUSE stating the reason for, and date of absence must be signed by a parent and is required even though the school was notified by phone. If a student is absent for more than 18 days within a trimester, report card grades will be withheld. If a student is tardy in excess of thirty (30) minutes on four days within one year, without a valid excuse, this student is truant. The principal can notify the public Child Welfare and Attendance authorities.

When students miss school for medical/dental appointments, written verification from the doctor’s or dentist’s office is required. Written parental permission is also required before a student is excused for these appointments. The parent must meet the child in the school office and sign a release form.
